Knoxville, Tennessee, has seen its third newborn surrendered to a Safe Haven Baby Box since the program launched in February 2023. The latest surrender occurred on October 20, according to WBIR. The Knoxville Fire Department confirmed that the first two babies surrendered at Station 17 have since been adopted, emphasizing the program’s role in providing a safe and legal option for parents in crisis.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes: A Lifeline for At-Risk Newborns
Safe Haven Baby Boxes are temperature-controlled units often installed in fire stations, police stations, and hospitals. They allow parents to safely place their newborns inside, with an automatic lock and alarm system to alert first responders. The baby is then quickly removed and taken to a hospital for a wellness check, typically leading to state custody and eventual adoption.
Legal Framework and National Expansion
Under Tennessee’s Safe Haven law, unharmed newborns up to 45 days old may be surrendered to baby boxes or in person to hospitals, fire stations, EMS providers, and police stations. The Safe Haven Baby Boxes organization, which originated in Indiana nine years ago, now operates in 25 states with over 455 locations. More than 80 infants have been surrendered to these boxes nationwide.
Support and Resources for Parents
The organization provides a confidential National Safe Haven Hotline, 1-866-99BABY1, offering free counseling and information about safe surrenders, including face-to-face options. It has assisted with over 200 additional infant surrenders through its hotline, demonstrating the program’s critical role in preventing tragedies.
Community and Future Plans
Knoxville currently has three baby box locations, with a fourth planned for the Burlington Fire Station near Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Holston Drive. Fire Department Captain Tim Woods emphasized the importance of these boxes, noting that they provide a crucial option for parents facing difficult decisions.
“It’s not an easy decision for anyone to make,” Woods said. “But … we have these boxes, and they’re putting more and more boxes out, and that is to prevent tragedies.”
