In a shocking case that has sparked national attention, a transgender NICU nurse in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has been charged with child abuse after a premature baby girl was found with multiple fractures and bruises. Charges Against the Nurse
Kieran Ansley, a 43-year-old nurse who identifies as a transgender man, was arrested earlier this month and faces four counts of child abuse. According to court documents reviewed by WOOD-TV, the infant, a four-month-old girl, was discovered with severe injuries during an early-morning visit by her mother. Medical tests revealed multiple fractures, including broken leg bones, and bruises on various parts of her body.
“The totality of the findings resulted in a diagnosis of pediatric physical abuse,” the court documents stated. Ansley was allegedly seen jogging to intercept the parents when they arrived at the NICU, dismissing their concerns about the child’s condition. Despite the mother’s insistence that the baby’s tongue appeared blue and almost black, Ansley claimed it was “not a big deal.”
Medical and Legal Response
Corewell Health, the parent healthcare organization of Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, confirmed that Ansley is no longer employed by the hospital system and took “immediate action” upon receiving the allegations. A hospital spokesperson said, “Our hearts go out to the patient and the patient’s family. The care and safety of our patients is our top priority, and we have zero tolerance for abuse.”
The baby, who was born at 23 weeks and weighed just over a pound, is now 10 months old and “doing wonderful” at home. Her grandfather, Robert Steavens, emphasized the family’s commitment to healing and trust in the process.

In December 2025, an account believed to belong to Ansley posted an image on Facebook, showing the nurse in hospital garb with the caption: “Top Surgery today!!!” The post referred to a sex-change procedure that removes breast tissue. This incident has added to the controversy surrounding the case, highlighting the intersection of personal identity and professional responsibility.
