Abby Miller, a junior at Ole Miss, is no stranger to sports photography. She began her journey in high school in Nashville and has since been interning with Ole Miss’s sports photography department. Prior to the game, Miller captured the pre-game tailgates and the tense atmosphere during the Walk of Champions. She then moved to Vaught Hemingway Stadium for warm-ups and the national anthem.
During the game, Miller took photos throughout the first 58 minutes of play. It was during the final moments of the game, when Ole Miss secured their revenge on Kiffin, that she captured the now-iconic image. Miller was at the top of the student section, where she saw the play unfold and quickly snapped the shot.
Behind the Shot: A Moment of Focus
Miller was so focused on capturing the celebration of the Rebels that she didn’t even realize the moment had occurred until the next day. “I didn’t even realize that moment quite literally happened, because I was so focused on getting them celebrating,” she explained.
“When you’re taking sports photos, you can’t just kind of half-do it. Like you have to be fully locked in when you’re taking it. You need to be able to predict almost what is going to happen,” she added.
A Viral Moment
Miller’s photo has since gone viral, shared across multiple platforms and receiving overwhelming support from fans. She expressed her gratitude for the attention and support, crediting her faith and the opportunity to pursue her passion in sports photography.
“Thank you to everyone who has shared, liked and/or commented on my photo that has been used across so many platforms from the game. I have been overwhelmed by all the love and support! Truly glory to God because it through HIM that I am doing what I’m doing! He has been so good!” Miller wrote on her social media.
As college football fans continue to follow the season, they may not realize that the iconic image of the Rebels’ revenge on Kiffin was captured by a young student who is just beginning her journey in sports photography.
