Republican lawmakers are threatening to block President Donald Trump’s nominees and derail his legislative agenda over restrictions on satellite services used by Ukraine’s military, according to The New York Times. The dispute centers on the disruption of Starlink and Starshield, satellite networks operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which Ukrainian forces rely on for battlefield communications and drone operations.
Disruptions Hamper Ukraine’s Military Operations
Ukrainian officials reported that restrictions on these satellite services have hampered both offensive missions and efforts to intercept Russian drones. Despite Trump reportedly asking Musk to restore Ukraine’s full access, Ukrainian officials say the restrictions remain in place, prompting lawmakers to demand answers.
Lawmakers Demand Accountability
Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), a former FBI agent with experience in Russian counterintelligence, has doubted the disruptions were accidental and has threatened investigations and budget cuts to the agencies involved. He expressed concern over delays in ballistic missile interceptors and interruptions to early-warning intelligence.
Broader Congressional Backlash
The backlash extends beyond the satellite dispute. Trump’s efforts to waive sanctions on Russia and purchase Russian diesel fuel have frustrated Republicans who supported new sanctions on Moscow. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, has urged Trump to accept a Ukrainian proposal to suspend attacks on Russian petroleum infrastructure in exchange for American assistance in identifying missile and drone launch sites.
Push for Satellite Access Expansion
A bipartisan group of nearly two dozen House members has urged Trump to press Musk to allow Ukraine to use Starlink to target Russian missile launchers inside Russia. Seven Republicans, including Fitzpatrick, Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), and Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC), signed the letter, arguing that expanded satellite access could save lives and provide Putin with greater incentives to negotiate.
White House Defends Trump’s Approach
The White House has defended Trump’s approach as an effort to end a war that has killed thousands and dragged on for over four years. Trump has blamed Zelensky for complicating negotiations and said his goal is to stop the fighting.
