Republican Secretary of State Marco Rubio is publicly calling on disaffected Cubans to quietly team up with the CIA and force change on the communist-run island.
Rubio laid out the appeal Friday evening on his official State Department account on X. He told frustrated Cubans that “now is the time” to act, according to the post.
To those who seek to create positive change in Cuba – now is the time. The disappointment of failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of only a few; seize this opportunity to create the change you desire through a discrete partnership with the CIA.
The secretary pointed to a corrupt elite and years of unmet pledges as reason to act now. He wrote that Cubans should “seize this opportunity to create the change you desire through a discrete partnership with the CIA.” (RELATED: Marco Rubio Said The Quiet Part Out Loud)
The message arrived minutes after Republican President Donald Trump wrapped a campaign rally in Fort Myers, Florida. Trump told the crowd that Navy ships heading home from the Iran war could pause roughly 50 yards off Cuba’s shoreline. He said he would then “send Marco Rubio in to finish up the job.”
.@POTUS: "We’re gonna come back from Iran, those beautiful ships will pass Cuba. We’ll have one of them stop about 50 yards off the coast. They’ll raise up their hands — and then we’re gonna send @SecRubio in to finish up the job." *crowd ROARS* https://t.co/91Jf26EWDM
Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío wrote on X that there “must be a great deal of desperation or misery within the agency for it to be forced to sell its services like a tube of toothpaste.” The CIA then released a Spanish-language video that coached would-be informants to use a private browser and a throwaway email when reaching out online.
Ahora EEUU se apea con reclutamientos públicos de la CIA. Debe haber mucho desespero o pobreza en la filas de la agencia cuando tiene que vender sus ofrecimientos como pasta de dientes.
Washington has piled on sanctions as the island reels from blackouts, shortages and inflation, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP). Rubio struck a tougher note with reporters, calling the island a longstanding security threat to the United States, the Associated Press (AP) reported. He doubts any deal can hold under the current government.
The public campaign runs against quieter back-channel work. Rubio quietly negotiated earlier this year with a grandson of former ruler Raúl Castro, according to Axios. Cuba’s envoy has charged the secretary with fixating on regime change, Newsweek reported. Trump answered online jokes about his diplomat running Cuba with a simple “sounds good to me!”
The decades-old U.S. embargo still divides the two capitals more than any other issue, according to AFP.
