After years of complaints, jokes, and requests, Cheerios has finally taken action to solve one of life’s most common annoyances: the difficulty of keeping cereal fresh and easy to access. General Mills, the beloved breakfast cereal brand, has partnered with Ziploc to introduce resealable plastic bags inside the cardboard box packaging. This new feature aims to keep cereal fresher longer and make it easier to serve a perfect bowl of Cheerios.
A Response to Consumer Demand
The move comes after the company received thousands of requests for a more convenient resealable option. According to a press release, the new packaging includes a convenient ‘pour spout’ to streamline the serving process. Starting this week, the updated packaging will be available exclusively at Walmart for both Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios.
Emilie Knox, Vice President and Business Unit Director for Cheerios at General Mills, expressed the company’s commitment to addressing consumer needs. ‘General Mills has received letters, emails, and DMs asking for an easier way to reseal a cereal box, and we decided it was time to partner with the ultimate freshness brand: Ziploc®,’ she said. ‘Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal™ takes a small, everyday cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for, making the whole routine easier and more enjoyable.’
Declining Cereal Consumption
The change in packaging comes as breakfast cereal consumption is on the decline. From 2021 to 2026, American cereal purchases dropped from nearly 2.5 billion boxes per year to 2.1 billion, representing a 13% decrease, according to market research firm Nielsen IQ. This decline has been attributed to various factors, including the impact of the COVID pandemic, shifting dietary preferences, and a move away from refined carbohydrates.
Gen Z, in particular, is less likely to eat breakfast cereal, often opting for alternatives such as eggs, fruit, vegetables, or protein bars. While it remains to be seen if the new packaging will help revive the cereal industry, online reactions have been largely positive, with many calling the change long overdue.
‘That’s actually kind of genius,’ one reaction on X said. ‘This is an insanely good idea. Big cereal has done it again,’ another commenter agreed. ‘We got flying cars before resealable Cheerios,’ another joked.
