Microsoft has raised concerns about the trustworthiness of frontier AI models, warning that their unpredictable behavior poses significant risks. Hayete Gallot, Microsoft’s Security Executive Vice President, stated in a blog post that these models ‘cannot be trusted’ due to their potential to act outside intended parameters.

Unpredictable AI Behavior

Gallot emphasized that AI agents, or ‘frontier models,’ can adapt to changing contexts and may not behave as intended. They can also collaborate and collude with other agents to achieve their goals, without needing to be compromised. This behavior, according to Gallot, makes them ‘agentic insiders’ that require continuous monitoring and security measures.

‘Monitoring and securing those agents must become continuous,’ Gallot stated in the blog post. Microsoft’s Project Perception security system is designed to address these challenges by deploying ‘Guardian Agents’ to supervise other AI agents around the clock.

Project Perception features three teams of AI agents: red, blue, and green. The red team hunts for vulnerabilities and simulates attacks, the blue team investigates threats, and the green team fixes issues across a company’s systems. The system aims to provide continuous learning and defense capabilities.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella echoed these concerns in a personal blog post, arguing that companies should guard against AI models as they would any insider with access to sensitive information. ‘The most trustworthy Super Intelligence system will not be the one with the model we trust most,’ Nadella wrote. ‘It will be the one that enables us to trust the model the least.’

Elon Musk also raised concerns about advanced AI, highlighting its persuasive abilities. ‘So many people are going to get one-shotted by super persuasive super intelligences and I might be one of them,’ Musk tweeted.

Microsoft’s Project Perception is currently in public preview, with a full release date yet to be announced. The company continues to emphasize the importance of securing AI systems as they become more integrated into business operations.
