Wyoming Senator-elect Harriet Hageman is calling on Senate Republicans to act swiftly in the remaining days of the lame-duck Congress to pass critical budget measures and protect agencies targeted by Democrats. Hageman, who won her Senate race in Tuesday’s election, emphasized the need to codify Trump-era policies and safeguard programs from potential defunding efforts.
Push for Reconciliation Legislation
During an interview with Just the News, Hageman urged her GOP colleagues to replicate the successful budget reconciliation strategy used to fund Trump’s Homeland Security agenda. She argued that such a move would require only 51 Senate votes, bypassing the filibuster, and allow Trump to use his veto power to block future Democratic attempts to reverse these policies.
“We did it with reconciliation for the Department of Homeland Security just this summer,” Hageman said. “We need to target those agencies that we know the Democrats are going to target from the standpoint of trying to either destroy them, undermine them or fundamentally change where they go.”
Strategic Move for 2028
Hageman’s call to action comes as the GOP is set to face a minority position in the Senate, making her a key voice in shaping the party’s legislative agenda. By securing key policies through reconciliation, the Republicans could solidify their priorities for the 2028 election cycle, ensuring they are not undone by future Democratic majorities.
Her strategy highlights a growing concern within the party about the potential for Democratic-led spending plans to target conservative priorities. Hageman’s focus on codifying Trump’s foreign aid cuts and protecting agencies from defunding aligns with broader Republican efforts to shield their legislative achievements from reversal.
Increasing Political Influence
With her upcoming Senate swearing-in, Hageman is poised to play an even more significant role in shaping Republican policy and countering Democratic initiatives. Her push for immediate legislative action underscores the urgency felt within the party to secure its legislative gains before the end of the current session.
