State Representative Gina Hinojosa has made history by defeating incumbent Governor Greg Abbott in Texas’ gubernatorial race, becoming the Lone Star State’s first Democratic governor in over 30 years. With 68% of votes counted, Hinojosa secured 56% of the total votes, amassing 4,038,385 ballots, while Abbott received 2,976,442 votes, or 41%, according to the Associated Press.

Abbott’s Record and Campaign Focus

Despite Abbott’s strong base of support and three terms as governor, Hinojosa managed to surge in the final stretch of the election. Abbott, who assumed the governorship in 2015 after a decade as Texas attorney general and a stint on the state’s Supreme Court, campaigned on a platform of affordability, including cutting costs for housing, healthcare, and energy. He also emphasized property tax reform, public safety, and improvements to education and public schools.

Hinojosa’s Vision for Texas

Hinojosa, a state representative whose district includes parts of Austin, focused her campaign on public schools. She advocated for ending the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) program, calling it “arbitrary” and an attempt by Abbott to centralize control over education. Her platform also included lowering healthcare, grocery, and utility costs, as well as stopping private equity firms from acquiring single-family homes and ending residential property taxes.

Data Center Regulations and Environmental Concerns

Abbott’s campaign also highlighted his efforts to address data center development by placing a temporary freeze on new Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) permits for data centers. This move was aimed at ensuring such projects would not jeopardize the state’s electric grid or natural resources. Hinojosa’s campaign, in turn, called for a moratorium on data centers until protective legislation could be passed.

A Historic Moment for Texas

The election marks a significant turning point for Texas, shifting the state’s political landscape and signaling a potential realignment in the South. With Hinojosa’s victory, the state’s policies are expected to reflect a new focus on affordability, education reform, and environmental protection, all of which were central to her campaign.
