Bill Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach of the New England Patriots, is among five coaches in the running for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2027 class. The list, announced by the Canton, Ohio-based Hall of Fame, includes Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Dan Reeves, and Mike Shanahan.
Five Coaches in the Running
Belichick, who was not elected in his first year of eligibility, remains a top contender for the Hall of Fame. The subcommittee selected these five from an initial list of 14 nominees. The final selection will be made by the Hall’s 25-person selection committee, which will vote for six enshrinees in early 2027.
Coughlin, who led the New York Giants to two Super Bowl titles, has a strong history with the team. Holmgren, who coached the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks, also has a notable record, including a Super Bowl victory with the Packers. Reeves, who led the Denver Broncos to three Super Bowl appearances, and Shanahan, who won two Super Bowls with the Broncos, are also in the running.
Belichick’s Controversial Past
Belichick’s career has not been without controversy. In 2007, he was involved in the “Spygate” scandal, where the New England Patriots were caught filming defensive signals from the New York Jets. He was fined $500,000 for the incident. Despite this, Belichick remains a highly respected figure in the NFL.
Belichick’s final season with the Patriots was in 2023, after which he moved to college football, coaching at North Carolina. His relationship with quarterback Tom Brady, who won six Super Bowls with him, remains a key part of his legacy.
Hall of Fame Selection Process
The Hall of Fame’s selection process involves multiple stages. After the subcommittee narrows down the candidates, the 25-person selection committee will vote for six enshrinees. A minimum of 80% support is required for enshrinement, which could result in anywhere from three to seven Hall of Famers each year.
The 2027 Hall of Fame class will be announced at “NFL Honors” in Los Angeles in February, with enshrinement taking place in August in Canton, Ohio.
