Billy Crystal has opened up about a profound loss of faith in God following a series of personal tragedies, including the devastation of losing his home in the Palisades wildfires and the sudden death of his close friend and longtime colleague, Rob Reiner.

Personal Losses and Spiritual Doubt

During an interview with CBS Sunday Morning on October 11, Crystal shared the emotional weight of these events, which have shaken his spiritual beliefs. When asked if he still converses with God, Crystal responded, ‘No, because I — I don’t trust him.’ His words reflect a deep sense of disillusionment in the face of life’s unpredictability.

Fire, Grief, and the Unseen Connection

Crystal described the loss of his home and the memories tied to it as an ‘absolute’ loss, emphasizing the emotional toll of the Palisades wildfires. He also recounted the profound grief of losing Reiner, who was killed in their Los Angeles home in December 2025. The two had been close friends and collaborators, having worked together on the iconic film ‘When Harry Met Sally.’

Humor as a Coping Mechanism

Despite the pain, Crystal turned to humor and comedy as a way to cope, stating, ‘You have to, man. You’ve gotta. It’s a healer.’ He highlighted how laughter has always been a source of strength during difficult times, even in the ‘darkest of times.’

Art as Healing

Crystal is currently promoting his new one-man Broadway show titled ‘860,’ which is inspired by the street address of his home lost in the wildfires. He shared that Reiner had approved of the title, saying, ‘That’s the one,’ expressing his excitement about the project.

Crystal’s reflections underscore a journey of loss, grief, and resilience, as he navigates the complexities of faith and the human experience in a world marked by uncertainty and tragedy.
