Canadian-born singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has officially become a U.S. citizen after a 62-year journey, marking a significant milestone in her life. The 82-year-old artist, who has long resided in the United States, shared footage of her naturalization ceremony on her Instagram account, highlighting her long-awaited transition to American citizenship.

A Long-Expected Moment

Mitchell, who moved to the U.S. in the mid-1960s, posted a video of her ceremony along with a photo of herself next to an American flag. The image, which she shared with over a million followers, showed her wearing a red beret, sunglasses, and extra stars and stripes pinned to her cardigan. The caption read, “A journey that began 62 years ago,” underscoring the long path to her new status.

Political Comments and Public Remarks

Mitchell, known for her candid personality, has frequently expressed her frustration with U.S. politics, particularly regarding her inability to vote as a Canadian. In a 2024 concert, she joked about Donald Trump, referencing the rapper’s track, and said, “I wish I could vote… I’m a Canadian. I’m one of those lousy immigrants.”

Her criticism of Trump continued during a public appearance at the Juno Awards in Canada, where she praised Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, calling him a “blessing” and expressing relief to be back in her home country.

Early Life and Career

Mitchell was born in Fort Macleod, Alberta, in 1943, and eventually settled in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Her early performances in folk clubs there led to opportunities in Calgary and Toronto, where she met U.S. folk singer Chuck Mitchell. They married in 1965 and she moved to the U.S., though the marriage ended two years later. Mitchell has made the U.S. her home ever since.

Upcoming Biopic and Legacy

A documentary about Mitchell is being directed by Cameron Crowe, who began work on it in the early 2020s. Additionally, record executive Clive Davis recently announced that Meryl Streep will portray Mitchell in an upcoming biopic, further cementing her legacy in music history.
