Actor Nicolas Cage has revealed he’s still living in hotels and described himself as ‘a little bit homeless’ more than a month after a sinkhole destroyed his Malibu home. Speaking at Los Angeles Comic Con, Cage shared his Halloween plans, which include trick-or-treating with his four-year-old daughter, August, and watching ‘The Shining.’
‘Absolutely. I’m currently a little bit homeless. Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels,’ Cage said. ‘I don’t have normal trick-or-treaters I would like to enjoy tonight.’
Cage, 62, added that he plans to watch ‘The Shining,’ a film directed by Stanley Kubrick, which he called one of his favorite movies. ‘I’m going to watch a movie where the director was actually nominated for the worst director at the Razzies, called ‘The Shining,’ Stanley Kubrick — can you believe that? That is one of my favorite movies ever made, he directed the hell out of that movie.’
The sinkhole, which opened in September, was caused by coastal erosion and heavy rains. It swallowed a large portion of Cage’s driveway, but no one was at home at the time. The incident forced Cage to evacuate, and the city deemed his home unsafe due to the damage.
‘The loss of access for Fire and Sheriff’s personnel to respond to medical, fire or law enforcement emergencies,’ the city stated, ‘made the house on that stretch of road unlivable.’
All 31 homes on the beachfront drive were marked as unsafe, either due to their proximity to the hole or because the damage made access impossible for residents and emergency services. While Cage is still unable to return to his home, he remains optimistic about the future and continues to engage with fans and the public.
