Patriots Coach Flags Referee for ‘Sensitive’ Comment
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel faces penalty after calling referee ‘sensitive’ during sideline spat.

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel drew a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after calling a referee’s call ‘a terrible f*cking call’ during Sunday’s game. The incident occurred during a sideline spat, with Vrabel expressing frustration over a controversial call that gave the Buffalo Bills a 1st-and-goal at the 6. Three plays later, Bills quarterback Josh Allen scored, tying the game at 14-14.
Despite the Patriots ultimately winning 29-26, Vrabel’s reaction to the referee’s decision did not sit well with him. In a post-game interview, Vrabel explained his frustration, stating, ‘I told him that’s a terrible f-ing call, and I’ve said that about 87 times since I’ve been a head coach. It was nothing derogatory. You’d have to ask him; I think he was a little sensitive.’ Vrabel also mentioned his trust in Patriots VP of football operations and strategy John Streicher regarding the call’s accuracy.
According to ESPN’s Mark Reiss, head official Bill Vinovich cited Vrabel’s use of profanity as the reason for the flag. When asked if Vrabel received a warning before being penalized, Vinovich was dismissive, saying, ‘I don’t know how you’re going to give a warning. It’s not something that’s going to happen twice. When you use language like that, it’s pretty much a given.’ This reaction has raised questions, especially given the common use of profanity by coaches and players on the field.
Some analysts have pointed out the oddity of flagging Vrabel for an f-bomb, especially since it wasn’t directed at the referee in a derogatory way. If referees start flagging coaches for such language, the NFL could face significant challenges in managing sideline conduct. The incident highlights the ongoing tension between on-field communication and the strict enforcement of rules by officials.
