A bizarre incident occurred during a high school football game in Missouri on Thursday night when a referee grabbed a player after the player scored a touchdown. The incident took place during a game between Glendale High School and Kickapoo High School. Glendale’s wide receiver, Joelle Rover, scored a touchdown and performed a kick move similar to the iconic dance move made famous by Michael Jackson. While the move was seen as harmless by many, the referee clearly disagreed and confronted Rover, grabbing him and shouting at him.
Coach Condemns Referee’s Actions
Rover raised his hands in shock as he argued with the official. Glendale head coach Frank Tristan then turned his frustration toward another official, accusing them of allowing the incident to occur. Tristan reportedly said, “He doesn’t need to be touching my player. You talk to me. That’s ridiculous. He needs to grow up.”
Referee Suspended Indefinitely
The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) acted swiftly, suspending the referee indefinitely. MSHSAA Communications Director Andrew Kauffman stated, “We were made aware of the situation, and the official in question has been suspended indefinitely.”
School District Calls for Review
The Springfield Public School District, which governs both Glendale and Kickapoo high schools, also expressed concern over the incident. SPS Chief Communications Officer Stephen Hall said, “We have engaged with MSHSAA to ask them to review the situation due to our concern.”
The incident has sparked a broader discussion about the conduct of officials during high school games and the need for clear guidelines to prevent such confrontations. While the referee’s actions were deemed inappropriate, the incident highlights the emotional intensity of high school sports and the importance of maintaining respect and safety for all participants.
