President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that approximately 70 million American children under the age of 18 are now automatically enrolled in “Trump Accounts,” a federal investment initiative designed to build long-term wealth for the next generation. The move, part of the Trump administration’s broader economic strategy, aims to expand access to financial growth for young Americans.
Auto-Enrollment Expands Access to Federal Investment Program
The accounts, established under the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB) legislation, provide a $1,000 federal seed contribution to eligible children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028. The money is deposited into tax-deferred investment accounts that can be accessed for qualifying expenses like higher education or purchasing a first home.
Previously, parents had to actively file paperwork to register their children, but the new system streamlines the process by automatically enrolling eligible minors based on data from tax returns and Social Security Administration records. This change eliminates the administrative burden on families, ensuring more children can benefit from compounding growth.
Parents Still Required to Verify Accounts
While the accounts are automatically created, parents and legal guardians must still complete a brief verification step via the program’s website or mobile app to formally claim and manage the custodian account. The initiative also allows for supplemental contributions from families, employers, and private donors, with annual limits set at $5,000 per child and $2,500 from employers.
Trump emphasized during his remarks that the program ensures all American families, regardless of financial background, can participate directly in the nation’s economic output. The initiative reflects a growing focus on long-term wealth-building strategies for future generations.
