The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has released a report highlighting the increasing number of anti-Semitic boycotts targeting Jewish and Israeli artists within the entertainment industry. According to the report titled ‘Dark Stage: Jewish Voices in Entertainment and the Rise of Cultural Boycotts,’ the situation has escalated significantly, with 65 documented cases of Jewish or Israeli performers facing attacks from anti-Israel sources.
Political Protests vs. Discrimination
The report distinguishes between political protests and actual discrimination, emphasizing the growing hostility toward Jewish performers, producers, and other industry professionals. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt noted that the extent of the problem is alarming, stating, ‘We knew the situation was bad, we just didn’t know how bad, and no one had documented it this way before.’
Cancellations and Harassment
The ADL has mapped out venues that have canceled shows featuring Jewish performers, citing ‘security’ reasons. Some cancellations were due to direct threats, while others lacked legitimate justification. The report cites specific cases, including the cancellation of musician Mikey Pauker and Israeli musician Raviv Kaner, as well as attempts to cancel comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s shows.
Online Harassment and Pressure
Jewish performers are also facing increased online harassment and pressure to remove content that is explicitly Jewish. The report highlights the challenges artists are encountering in securing literary representation and the broader cultural impact of these trends.
Call to Action
The ADL is urging entertainment venues, museums, publishers, and other cultural institutions to address antisemitism in their policies, resist identity-based pressure campaigns, and increase recognition of Jewish artists and cultural heritage. The report underscores the need for systemic change to protect the rights and opportunities of Jewish creators in the entertainment industry.
