Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) has been vindicated in his claims that Democrat candidate Mary Peltola orchestrated a decoy candidate strategy to confuse voters. The senator first raised concerns in June 2025 about a man with the same name running against him, a tactic he called a ‘left-wing decoy’ aimed at siphoning votes.
Decoy Candidate Strategy Unveiled
Speaking on The Alex Marlow Show on June 2, Sullivan warned that a man named Daniel J. Sullivan, a retired schoolteacher from Petersburg, Alaska, had filed as a candidate in the race against Peltola. He emphasized that the individual was a ‘sham candidate’ and a ‘liberal, progressive Democrat’ who had donated to Peltola’s campaign.
The New York Times revealed that Peltola’s campaign had compiled a list of Alaskans named Dan Sullivan and sought to recruit one to run for Senate. This effort, referred to internally as the ‘ballot composition project,’ was designed to confuse voters on Alaska’s four-person ballot. The scheme was confirmed by former Peltola campaign staffers, who stated that Peltola herself was aware of the plan.
Legal and Political Repercussions
Despite Peltola’s denial of involvement, the Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the matter, seeking to delay the certification of the Alaska Senate election if Sullivan loses. A judge had previously dismissed the lawsuit, but the DOJ continues to push for a review.
Sullivan’s claims have been largely substantiated, with the decoy candidate’s actions and the Peltola campaign’s involvement now confirmed. The incident has sparked broader discussions about electoral integrity and the use of deceptive tactics in political campaigns.
