According to a recent study by the Media Research Center (MRC), Apple News promoted over 80 stories that negatively framed Republican priorities in the weeks leading up to the midterm elections, while promoting zero positive stories. The MRC examined Apple News’s top 20 stories from September 15 to 30 and found that the app failed to push any story that positively characterized the GOP’s priorities.
Republican Priorities Framed Negatively
Republican voters who rely on Apple News for information were fed about five stories per day that negatively portrayed the Republican’s top ten policy priorities, including immigration, law and order, and drug enforcement, according to the report. The MRC highlighted that Apple News ensured immigration was framed through court defeats and sensationalist stories, the economy through high gas prices, and law and order through positive portrayals of police abolition.
Political Bias Accusations
MRC President David Bozell criticized Apple News for its alleged left-wing bias, calling it a ‘bad-news buffet’ for Republican voters. He questioned whether Apple News was engaging in election interference in the lead-up to the midterms. Bozell also noted that Apple News, which comes preinstalled on every iPhone in America, has long been charged with displaying a left-wing bias.
More Evidence of Political Curating
MRC staffers Luis Cornelio and Madison Van Zant added that the review adds to the MRC’s growing body of evidence that the platform’s editors continue to curate its feeds to push a left-wing political agenda. The study also found that Apple News hid stories that reported on the weak financial condition and mounting debt of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) ahead of the midterm elections.
Public Reaction and Concerns
The findings have raised concerns among voters about the influence of Apple News on political discourse. With millions of voters opening the app before elections, the MRC is calling for transparency about who selects the stories and why Republicans received a disproportionate share of negative coverage. The study underscores the ongoing scrutiny Apple News faces from the Trump administration and highlights the broader debate over media bias and election influence.
