Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) has secured the governor’s race in Tennessee, becoming the first woman elected to the position in the state’s history. The Associated Press officially called the race for Blackburn early Wednesday morning, with over 95% of the vote counted. Blackburn led her opponent, Memphis Councilwoman Jerri Green (D), with 45.3% of the vote to Green’s 43.1%, according to the New York Times’ election results.

Blackburn’s Political Journey

Blackburn, a long-standing Republican, has served in the U.S. Senate since 2019, beginning her second term in 2025. Prior to her Senate career, she was the U.S. congresswoman for Tennessee’s Seventh Congressional District from 2003 to 2019. Her campaign was bolstered by the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, who praised her leadership and promised her support in his recent post on X.

Trump’s Endorsement and Political Context

Trump reiterated his backing for Blackburn, calling her a ‘Great Senator’ and emphasizing her commitment to economic growth, tax cuts, and border security. He criticized Green as a ‘Radical Left Democrat’ with extreme views on issues such as open borders and transgender rights. The race was seen as a key test for the Republican Party in a state that has not elected a Democrat to statewide office since 2006.

Political Landscape and Polling

Despite sparse polling, Blackburn was considered the favorite due to her national profile and the state’s deep-red leanings. A Quantus poll from early August showed her leading Green by a significant margin, with 49% to 28%. In the Republican primary, Blackburn defeated two opponents, John Rose and Monty Fritts, by double digits with a 43.6% plurality.

Historic Significance

Blackburn’s victory marks a historic moment for Tennessee, as she becomes the first woman to hold the governor’s office. Her win underscores the continued influence of the Republican Party in the state and highlights the broader national implications of her campaign, which focused on conservative values and economic policies.
