The piece, authored by former USA Today columnist David Mastio, presents data from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), showing a significant decline in violent deaths of transgender individuals. According to the HRC’s own figures, violent deaths of transgender people fell nearly 50%, from 53 in 2023 to 27 in 2025.
Activists’ Claims Under Scrutiny
Mastio’s article highlights that the HRC, despite acknowledging this decline, still described the period as an ‘ongoing onslaught of violence.’ Activists defending the ‘trans genocide’ narrative argue that the data is incomplete, suggesting that misgendering and misnaming of victims might lead to underreporting. However, Mastio questions the likelihood of increased misgendering in police and news reports as awareness of transgender identity has grown.
Supporting Evidence from Manhattan Institute
The article also cites a report from the Manhattan Institute by Vincent Lundgren and Colin Wright, which states that transgender people are less likely to be murdered than the rest of the population, and that most murders are committed by individuals of the same race. The report also notes that intimate partner violence, not hate, is the leading motive for most such murders.
HRC’s Silence Sparks Criticism
When Mastio asked HRC to rebut the report, the group did not respond. Colin Wright, a Manhattan Institute fellow, criticized HRC’s silence, calling it ‘fundamentalist fundraising propaganda’ and stating that the report’s data is irrefutable. Wright praised the Globe’s article as a ‘shockingly sober article,’ expressing hope that it signals a shift in media coverage.
Globe’s Position and the Broader Implications
The Boston Globe acknowledged the article as a guest op-ed, emphasizing that the views expressed are those of the author. Despite the publication’s liberal leanings, the article’s factual presentation has drawn attention, with critics noting that the facts do not require the Globe’s endorsement.
