Republican Rep. Byron Donalds has officially been elected Florida’s next governor, securing a narrow victory in a closely contested race against Democrat David Jolly. The Associated Press called the race with over 95% of votes counted, with Donalds leading by just 1.3 percent, or fewer than 102,000 votes, as of 9:10 p.m. Eastern time.

Florida’s Economic Resilience During Pandemic

Despite Jolly’s criticism of Florida’s pandemic response, the state thrived economically during and after the crisis. Inflation-adjusted GDP per resident in Florida rose by 16.9 percent from 2019 to 2025, compared to 5.5 percent in Pennsylvania. Florida also recovered payroll jobs more quickly than Pennsylvania, drawing residents seeking greater freedom and fewer restrictions.

Political Shift and Voter Trends

Florida’s political landscape has shifted significantly since 2020, with Republicans gaining substantial ground. For the first time in November 2021, registered Republicans outnumbered Democrats in the state, and that gap has continued to grow, with over 1.5 million more Republican voters registered today.

Donalds’ Vision for the State

During a summer interview with Breitbart News, Donalds emphasized his plans to build on the success of outgoing Governor Ron DeSantis. He highlighted priorities such as improving transportation, reducing insurance costs, and positioning Florida as a global financial hub within a decade.

Jolly’s Criticism of Florida’s Policies

Jolly, who fled Florida during the pandemic, expressed embarrassment over the state’s policies, including its stance on protecting children from genital mutilation surgery and opposing illegal immigration. He sought to apologize on behalf of Florida for what he called ‘culture wars.’

Republican Support and Future Outlook

The Republican National Committee praised Donalds’ victory, calling Florida the best place to live, work, and raise a family due to its conservative leadership. With Donalds’ win, the GOP maintains its dominance in the state, setting the stage for continued policy initiatives aligned with conservative values.
