California State Assemblywoman Maria Pacheco is under scrutiny after allegedly following and harassing a man she mistakenly believed was an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. According to a formal complaint filed by Fresno resident Eric Bridges, Pacheco pursued him for 25 minutes before reaching his sister’s house, during which she allegedly blocked his vehicle and took photographs.
Incident Details and Complaint
Bridges, a hairstylist, detailed the incident in a TikTok video and submitted a formal complaint to authorities. He claimed that while driving to his sister’s house, he noticed an orange car following him closely and taking pictures of his vehicle. Concerned by the car’s behavior, Bridges parked near a park, only for the orange vehicle to block him into his parking spot.
After being encircled and photographed, Bridges drove away, and the orange car followed him to his sister’s house. During a verbal confrontation, the driver accused him of “looking like ICE.” Bridges started filming the encounter, after which the driver flipped him off and drove away. Upon reviewing the footage, Bridges identified Pacheco as the driver of the orange car.
Political Context and Reactions
Bridges reported receiving threats from individuals who now suspect he is an ICE agent. He expressed concern over Pacheco’s actions, stating, “I am deeply concerned Ms. Pacheco sought to represent herself as some kind of law enforcement officer when she is, in fact, a politician with no police powers.”
Pacheco, who is listed as “non-affiliated” but was endorsed by Democrats, has previously filmed herself confronting individuals she believed to be ICE agents. This incident follows a wave of Democratic politicians calling for noncooperation with ICE, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City, who urged property owners to reject ICE.
Broader Trends and Public Reaction
The incident highlights the growing tensions between local officials and ICE, with reports of a nearly 700% increase in assaults on ICE officers since 2024. As the political climate continues to shift, incidents like this underscore the impact of rhetoric and the potential for misunderstandings to escalate into serious confrontations.
