Dr. Jennifer Shuford, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) deputy director and chief medical officer, has announced her departure from the agency after just four months on the job. Shuford will leave her position on November 12, as confirmed by the CDC.

Shuford was appointed in April as part of a leadership team to support CDC Director Erica Schwartz, alongside Sean Slovenski as the agency’s chief operating officer. She served as a key figure in the CDC’s operations, bringing her experience as a former Texas health commissioner and infectious disease physician to the role.

In a statement, Shuford said she is leaving to spend more time with her family. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the CDC under President Trump and Secretary Kennedy, calling it an “amazing experience” and thanking them for their support.

As Shuford steps down, Satish Pillai, a career public health official, will serve as the acting deputy director and chief medical officer while the CDC searches for a permanent replacement. The agency has stated it will begin the process of identifying a new leader in the near future.

President Trump had announced new leadership for the CDC in April, including the nomination of Dr. Erica Schwartz as director, Sean Slovenski as deputy director, and Dr. Jennifer Shuford as deputy director. Dr. Schwartz was confirmed by the Senate over the summer, marking the completion of the leadership transition.

The CDC’s leadership changes come amid ongoing public health challenges and a focus on maintaining effective operations. While Shuford’s departure is not tied to any specific policy or controversy, her exit highlights the dynamic nature of federal health leadership.
