CNN’s top data analyst, Harry Enten, warned on Monday that polls predicting major Democratic wins in the Senate may not be telling the full story, even with less than 24 hours until polls open on Election Day. Enten emphasized that recent polling suggests Democrats could secure 54 Senate seats, but he cautioned that these numbers might not reflect the actual outcome.

Historical Polling Trends Hint at GOP Advantage

Enten pointed out that between the 2018 and 2024 elections, the GOP has historically outperformed final Senate polling averages in close races in states won by Donald Trump in the prior election. On average, the GOP has beaten these averages by four-point-one points. Applying this historical trend to the current Senate map, Enten suggested that Republicans could retain their majority despite the polls.

Possible GOP Gains in Key States

If the GOP is underestimated, Enten outlined a potential scenario where Democrats could lose several seats. He suggested that states like Alaska, Texas, Kansas, and Ohio could shift to red, reducing the Democratic total from 54 to 49. He stressed that polls are just tools and that there are multiple scenarios where Republicans could hold the Senate.

Trust in Parties on Key Issues

Enten also warned that polling has been inaccurate in recent years, and Democrats could also be underestimated. NBC News provided additional context, noting that voters’ trust in parties varies on specific issues. On immigration, voters favored the GOP by 11 points, while on corruption, they preferred Republicans by five points. On the economy, Republicans led by two points. In contrast, Democrats led on the Iran war by five points and on inflation by one point. The parties were dead even on upholding democracy.

Implications for the Midterm Election

Enten’s analysis highlights the uncertainty in the upcoming Senate races. While polls suggest a Democratic advantage, historical trends and voter trust data suggest the GOP could still emerge as the winner. As Election Day approaches, the final results will depend on how these trends play out in the real world.
