David Crowley has secured victory in Wisconsin’s gubernatorial race, becoming the state’s second consecutive Democratic governor. With 91% of votes counted, Crowley received 1,355,762 votes, or 53%, according to the Associated Press. His Republican opponent, Tom Tiffany, secured 1,180,966 votes, or 46%.
Crowley is taking over from outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers, who chose not to seek reelection. The state has a history of shifting between Democratic and Republican leadership in its gubernatorial elections.
Crowley’s Campaign Focus
Running as Milwaukee County Executive, Crowley previously served as a state representative and focused on issues such as housing, criminal justice reform, and reproductive freedom. His campaign platform emphasized economic growth rooted in local ownership and union labor, expanding the middle class, affordable housing, and climate action through investments in solar power. He also advocated for lowering property taxes and strengthening democracy through voting rights and nonpartisan redistricting.
Tiffany’s Campaign Promises
Tiffany, first elected to the U.S. House in 2020, campaigned on reducing taxes, including property taxes, taxes on tips, and overtime. He also pledged to prevent sales tax hikes and return a budget surplus to taxpayers. His platform included reducing utility costs, embracing nuclear energy, and creating jobs through occupational licensing reform and reducing government fees.
Lowering gas prices was also a key focus for Tiffany, as he planned to repeal the minimum markup law for gasoline retailers.
