Curtis Urges GOP to Return to Conservative Principles
Utah Senator calls for Republicans to recommit to core conservative values amid midterm losses.

Utah Senator John Curtis (R-UT) has called on Republicans to return to the ‘principled conservative values’ that once defined the party, following the Democrats’ sweeping victories in the midterm elections. In a post on X, Curtis lamented the current state of the party, stating that Americans had grown tired of the Biden administration’s policies, including a ‘hastily executed war,’ a ‘ballooning $40 trillion debt,’ and ‘unpredictable tariffs.’
Reaffirming Core Principles
Curtis emphasized that the American public wanted an economy that worked for them, but instead, they received a series of missteps and controversies. ‘It’s time for Republicans to return to the principled conservative values that once defined us—and that we’ve steadily abandoned over the last decade,’ he wrote.
Rooted in Pioneer Values
In a Substack article, Curtis reflected on his upbringing in Utah, where ‘pioneer values’ shaped his life and politics. He highlighted principles such as ‘hard work, thrift, self-reliance, faith, family, integrity, and responsibility to our neighbors.’ These values, he said, were once the cornerstone of the Republican Party, exemplified by leaders like Ronald Reagan, who championed ‘limited government, free trade, resolute diplomacy, and fiscal responsibility.’
Drift and Populism
Curtis acknowledged the ‘populist movement’ that brought many Americans into the party, many of whom felt ‘forgotten by Washington.’ However, he warned that the focus on winning elections has led to a gradual abandonment of core principles. ‘Many shrewd political minds found it worth abandoning these principles in order to win elections—they were largely right,’ he noted.
Path Forward
Curtis stressed that while winning elections is important, the ultimate goal should be governing according to principles that improve people’s lives. ‘We wanted to win so we could govern according to principles that make people’s lives better,’ he concluded.
