Former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean criticized the election of Donald Trump, stating that ‘no normal country would elect somebody like Donald Trump as president.’ Speaking on MS NOW’s ‘The Beat,’ Dean emphasized the need for the Democratic Party to refocus on its core mission of connecting with average Americans.

Rebuilding the Democratic Party

Dean acknowledged that the party’s current state has contributed to the election of Trump, saying, ‘We got ourselves into this.’ He argued that the Democratic Party has lost touch with the struggles of working-class Americans, which has allowed Trump to gain support.

‘We’re not, we weren’t a normal country because we had forgotten how we had to touch average Americans who were struggling,’ Dean said. He called for a more direct and genuine engagement with the public, stating, ‘Let’s just be blunt about this. We have a ways to go.’

Focus on Legislation, Not Purges

Dean also addressed the issue of Trump’s appointees, particularly Pete Hegseth, whom he called ‘completely incompetent.’ However, he cautioned against a wholesale purge of Trump’s allies, emphasizing the importance of focusing on legislative action.

‘Some people need to be removed,’ Dean said, ‘especially Hegseth, because armed forces are incredibly important to us and he’s making a mess out of the whole thing.’ Despite this, he urged the party to prioritize legislation that addresses the harm caused by Trump’s policies on working-class Americans, particularly in healthcare.

Dean’s remarks highlight a growing concern within the Democratic Party about the need for internal reform and a renewed commitment to the people they represent. As the party continues to navigate the aftermath of the 2024 election, the call for accountability and legislative action remains central to its strategy.
