Debra Messing, a longtime Democrat supporter and star of Will & Grace, has publicly endorsed Republican candidate Bruce Blakeman for governor of New York, marking a significant shift in her political alignment. Messing cited a sharp decline in living conditions in her hometown of Brooklyn as the primary reason for her support of Blakeman’s campaign.
Concerns Over Economic and Social Decline
During a recent fundraiser, Messing expressed her belief that the city’s current state has become unrecognizable from the one she loves. “The decline in this city over the last four years has been so exponential and devastating — economically, socially and on every level,” she said, according to the New York Post. “We’ve lost so much business here. People are leaving,” she added, highlighting the growing economic struggles faced by New Yorkers.
Messing emphasized the need for affordable living conditions, stating, “It’s just too expensive to live in New York City, and I love the fact that is at the top of your mind.” Her comments reflect a broader concern over rising costs and the impact on everyday residents.
Political History and Recent Shifts
Messing has long supported Democratic candidates, including Hillary Clinton and fellow actress Cynthia Nixon, who also ran for governor of New York. However, she has not shied away from criticizing members of her own party, particularly in the wake of the October 7 terrorist attack. Last November, she re-shared a post that described mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani as “an actual communist jihadist,” a label that drew considerable attention.
Blakeman, a Nassau County executive running against incumbent Democratic governor Kathy Hochul, thanked Messing for her support and for having the “courage to speak out.” He noted her efforts to “save New York and to make sure it’s safe for Jewish people who live in this community and in this state.” His campaign platform includes promises of tax cuts for New Yorkers.
President Trump is set to campaign with Blakeman in upstate New York later this week, signaling a potential alignment of political forces in the state.
