As American families stand at the grocery checkout, their primary concern is the rising cost of everyday essentials. Yet, Washington’s response has not focused on lowering prices but rather on expanding government involvement in areas like healthcare, childcare, and housing. Democrats, particularly their progressive wing, have made affordability a campaign promise, but their plans involve significant federal spending and increased government oversight.

Progressive Agenda: More Spending, Not Lower Prices

The Congressional Progressive Caucus has outlined an affordability agenda that includes federal generic-drug manufacturing, expanded housing support, and federally funded child care. While these proposals aim to reduce costs for families, they also require substantial taxpayer funding and raise concerns about long-term affordability.

Child care, for instance, is a major focus. The caucus proposes limiting family payments to 7% of household income, with many families paying no more than $10 a day. While this may seem appealing, it doesn’t account for the full cost of providing care, including wages, insurance, and supplies. Someone must pay the remaining expenses, and families may also contribute through taxes.

Construction and Housing: A Complex Equation

The housing plan includes $20,000 in first-time-buyer assistance and $1 trillion for housing supply and preservation. While these figures are impressive, the real test is whether they lead to more homes being built and made available. Without an increase in supply, the assistance may only increase competition for existing housing, driving up prices rather than lowering them.

Elon Musk and Political Investigations

As Democrats prepare to take control of the House, they are also scrutinizing business leaders, including Elon Musk. The billionaire has poured millions into Republican super PACs and is now facing potential investigations into his business practices and White House tenure. Critics argue that such investigations should focus on evidence of misconduct rather than political convenience.

Legislative Challenges and Accountability

Democrats’ promises of affordability must be backed by concrete plans and measurable outcomes. Simply creating a federal program does not guarantee lower costs or better access. The key is to ensure that the programs are efficient, competitive, and open to smaller businesses and new entrants. Without this, families may end up with a new set of rules rather than real solutions.

Ultimately, the burden of proof lies with those proposing these expansions. They must identify the full costs, explain the taxes or borrowing required, and provide clear standards for results. Families already make these decisions at their kitchen tables, and Washington should not be exempt from the same scrutiny.
