Following the Republicans’ devastating midterm election losses, Democrats are now focusing their attention on the Trump administration, with many lawmakers already calling for investigations, subpoenas, and potential impeachments. The Democratic Party has gained control of both the House and the Senate, flipping over two dozen House seats and seven Senate seats, including in traditionally Republican strongholds like Texas and Kansas. This shift has emboldened Democratic lawmakers to take a more aggressive stance against the Trump administration.

Subpoenas and Investigations on the Horizon

As Democrats prepare to take control of Congress in January, several lawmakers have already expressed their intentions to use their newfound power to hold the Trump administration accountable. New Jersey Rep. Analila Mejia joked on X, stating, ‘We’re going to toss out subpoenas like Mardi Gras beads.’ Similarly, Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey quipped, ‘They are going to need to plant new forests for all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing.’

Some lawmakers have even named specific Trump administration officials they plan to investigate. Illinois Rep. Delia Ramirez, for instance, called out officials like Noem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, and Bovino, instructing them to ‘clear your schedule.’ Ramirez also emphasized the importance of holding the administration accountable for the pain they’ve caused communities, stating, ‘We will hold every fascist in the administration accountable for pain they brought to our communities and we will fight for an affordable country.’

Impeachment Calls and Democratic Caution

While some lawmakers have called for the impeachment of Trump Cabinet officials, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries clarified that his Democratic colleagues have not approached him about it. ‘I haven’t had a single member of the House Democratic caucus talk to me about impeachment,’ Jeffries said during a press conference. ‘We’ve been relentlessly focused on affordability and accountability.’

Despite the calls for investigations and subpoenas, the Democratic Party is still navigating the political landscape, balancing its desire for accountability with the need to maintain a cohesive strategy. As the new Congress prepares to take power, the focus remains on holding the Trump administration responsible for its actions while working towards policies that benefit the American people.
