Following their sweeping victories in the midterm elections, Democrats have pledged to launch an investigation into President Donald Trump’s presidential library, according to a new report. With control of both the House and Senate now in Democratic hands, lawmakers are preparing to scrutinize the project, which is being funded by a nonprofit organization run by Trump’s son and son-in-law.
Democratic Scrutiny Begins
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) told CBS News that the donors supporting Trump’s personal project will now have to answer to a new congressional majority. “The donors bankrolling his personal vanity project will have to answer to a new majority in Congress,” Warren said. The report highlights that the library, set to be built in Miami, Florida, is expected to draw fresh attention from lawmakers who now hold the power to subpoena records and compel testimony.
Library Construction and Funding
The Trump Organization’s executive vice president, Eric Trump, shared video footage of the library, describing it as a “lasting testament to an amazing man.” The renderings show golden escalators, a full-size Air Force One, and a giant statue of Trump raising a fist, reminiscent of his 2024 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. The project is being funded by the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation, a nonprofit registered in Florida. According to the report, the foundation expects to raise $950 million by the end of 2027, with $600 million projected for 2027 alone, far exceeding what previous presidents raised at this stage.
Lawmakers Signal Investigation
CBS News reported that the new Democratic majority is planning to conduct a thorough review of the library’s funding and operations. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), a top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, warned Republicans and the Trump administration to “Lawyer up” after the election results. Warren emphasized that “giant corporations and foreign governments should not be able to buy influence in Washington with donations to the president’s library,” and that “any wrongdoing will be held accountable.”
Political and Financial Implications
The library project, which has been a point of contention, is now under the spotlight as Democrats seek to hold the administration accountable. With the new majority in Congress, the focus is shifting toward transparency and oversight, marking a significant shift in the political landscape following the midterms.
