Democrats Retreat From Key House Races Amid Trump’s Strong Showings
Democrats are scaling back efforts in key House races where Trump won by wide margins, signaling a strategic shift ahead of the midterms.

In the lead-up to the midterms, Democrats had hoped to make significant gains in traditionally red states like Florida and Texas. However, as the election approaches, the party is beginning to scale back its efforts in several districts where President Donald Trump won by large margins.
Strategic Withdrawal From Competitive Races
According to ad tracking firm Adpact, the main Democratic super PAC, House Majority PAC, is cutting its ad spend in two districts — Colorado’s Third and Florida’s 7th — where Trump won by 10 and 12 points respectively. These districts, once considered potential targets for Democratic gains, are now being abandoned as the party reassesses its strategy.
Rep. Jeff Hurd (R-Colo.) was a key target for Democrats this cycle due to shifting demographics in his district. However, Hurd’s opposition to tariffs, which disproportionately affected rural communities, ultimately helped secure his re-election. Despite initial pressure from Trump, Hurd won his primary and now faces a likely Republican opponent in the general election.
Florida’s 7th District: A Troubled Race
The Republican incumbent in Florida’s 7th District, Cory Mills, faced scrutiny over domestic abuse allegations and illegal contract dealings. Although Democrats initially saw a chance to flip the seat, Mills lost his primary to Ryan Elijah, a local radio news anchor, and is now expected to face an easy path to victory. As a result, Democrats are pulling out of the district, with ad spending cut by over half a million dollars.
Cook Political Report has shifted the district’s rating from “lean Republican” to “likely Republican,” signaling a clear Democratic retreat. This move reflects a broader trend as the party focuses its resources on more competitive races where Trump’s lead is less decisive.
Reassessing Priorities in a Changing Political Landscape
With the election drawing closer, Democrats are recalibrating their approach. While they still have a chance to win some races, the focus is shifting to districts where Trump’s margin of victory is closer to 10 points — the threshold often considered the limit of competitiveness. This strategic realignment highlights the challenges Democrats face in a political environment where Trump’s influence remains strong.
