Democrats win key races in North Carolina, including state House and Senate, with some unexpected candidates.

Democrats achieved a significant political shift in North Carolina on Tuesday, securing control of the state House of Representatives for the first time since 2010 and winning four statewide races. The party also saw several unexpected victories at the congressional level, including a woman served a felony warrant at a campaign event and a former West Virginia state senator with a history of anti-Trump comments.
Senate and State House Wins
Democrat Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley in the U.S. Senate race, marking the first time a Democrat has held the seat since 2008. In the state House, Democrats swept three races on the state Court of Appeals, while Republicans are expected to maintain the majority in the state Senate following a recount in one race.
Unexpected Congressional Winners
Democrat Jefferson, the mayor of High Point, defeated Republican Addison McDowell in a district spanning Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Concord. Jefferson raised just over $200,000 in the race, compared to McDowell’s $1.4 million. In another race, Democrat Ojeda narrowly defeated Republican Richard Hudson, a National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Chairman, by just over 2 percentage points. Ojeda, known for his anti-Trump rhetoric and support for abortion rights, also led a teacher strike while in the West Virginia state Senate.
Other Notable Races
Democrat Barringer, who moved to the area from Maryland, challenged Republican Brad Knott, a former federal prosecutor. Knott’s campaign saw warning signs in October and ran ads attacking Barringer’s recent move to the state. In another race, Democrat Womack faced a felony warrant related to a 2020 rental car charge. Womack raised just $59,000, compared to her opponent’s $2 million.
Uncertain Outcomes
Two races in the 3rd and 5th Districts remain unresolved, with provisional and absentee ballots potentially swinging the results. The two Republican incumbents, Greg Murphy and Virginia Foxx, are still in the race. Democrats also won both targeted races, NC-01 and NC-11, with Don Davis returning to Congress for a third term and Jamie Ager winning the seat once held by his grandfather.
