Democratic leaders are reportedly taking steps to curb two Senate candidates who have been criticized for their unpolished speech and progressive views. The focus is on Alaska’s Mary Peltola and Maine’s Troy Jackson, both of whom have faced scrutiny for their language and political stances.
Alaska’s Mary Peltola Under Fire
According to a report by The New York Times, former aides to Mary Peltola, a former Democratic representative from Alaska, have alleged that she used offensive language over the years. The report includes text messages where Peltola referred to a fishing executive as a ‘retard’ due to his support for factory trawling, a practice she opposes. She also used strong language in texts to her staff, expressing frustration with Planned Parenthood after a board member questioned her ‘deliberations’ on a defense bill that included pro-life policies.
One text message from January 2024 reportedly stated, ‘I hope Planned Parenthood knows that if we don’t win it’s more their loss than ours. FUCK THOSE BITCHES.’ Peltola also reportedly said of a member of a local Planned Parenthood chapter, ‘I hope she dies of a botched abortion.’ However, Peltola’s campaign denied there was a pattern of abuse, attributing her outbursts to the emotional strain of losing her mother and husband in a 2023 plane crash.
Maine’s Troy Jackson Faces Pressure
Troy Jackson, the Maine Senate candidate who replaced Graham Platner after his campaign collapsed, is also facing pressure from Democratic establishment figures. New York Magazine reported that consultants and operatives connected to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and national party leaders are growing frustrated with Jackson’s left-wing views and his ‘backwoods cadence.’ These advisers want him to adopt a more centrist approach to appeal to older liberal women.
According to the report, Jackson is being influenced by these consultants, with one source stating, ‘These people are very convincing. And he’s a very trusting guy. He’s being taken advantage of by people who have a lot of power and influence in this political sphere.’ The pressure on Jackson reflects a broader trend within the Democratic establishment to shape candidates’ messaging and public image.
