The Department of Justice (DOJ) has charged 30 individuals in Nevada and North Carolina for election fraud, with many of the accused being noncitizens who falsely claimed U.S. citizenship to vote. These charges come amid growing concerns about the integrity of the electoral process ahead of key midterm elections.

Noncitizen Voting and Legal Consequences

According to the DOJ, the charges include individuals who registered to vote and cast ballots in federal elections despite not being U.S. citizens. In Nevada, four aliens were charged for illegal voting, including Mlebinge Riziki Ramadhani, a lawful permanent resident from the Democratic Republic of Congo who voted in the 2022 federal election. In North Carolina, 18 additional individuals were charged, bringing the total to 30 indicted this year. At least one of these individuals is an illegal alien from Guatemala.

U.S. Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada emphasized the importance of protecting the sanctity of the ballot box, stating, “The District is committed to protecting the sanctity of the ballot box, and we will not tolerate any actions that threaten the fairness of our democratic system.” Similarly, U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson for the Western District of North Carolina highlighted the significance of every vote in close elections, noting that several races in the 2025 municipal elections were decided by just a few votes.

Electoral Integrity and Voter Fraud

Many of the noncitizens who voted in these elections had obtained resident or refugee status, yet still disregarded U.S. election laws. Selvin Porfidio Gonzalez Escobar, 43, from Guatemala, is among those charged for falsely claiming citizenship to vote and for voting as an alien. He registered to vote in 2020 and cast ballots in both the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

As the midterm elections approach, the DOJ is sending a clear message that there will be consequences for illegal voting. The charges underscore the ongoing efforts to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that only eligible voters participate in shaping the nation’s future.
