Michigan Democrat Senate candidate Abdulrahman El-Sayed has criticized anti-fentanyl laws as ‘draconian,’ arguing that they do not effectively address the opioid crisis. Instead, he has called for supervised consumption sites where individuals can use illegal drugs under observation, a stance that has drawn criticism from his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers.
El-Sayed Accuses Opponent of Expanding Opioid Crisis
El-Sayed accused Rogers of voting to ‘expand the opioid epidemic,’ despite the senator’s past criticisms of harsh fentanyl laws and support for supervised spaces. In a June 27, 2023, episode of his podcast, El-Sayed stated that while conservatives claim to be fighting fentanyl, their response has been to either blame the southern border or pass punitive laws. He noted that these laws have been proposed in 46 of 50 states, with Virginia classifying fentanyl as a ‘weapon of terrorism’ and thirty states enacting drug-induced-homicide statutes.
El-Sayed Advocates for Safer Drug Use Spaces
El-Sayed has long argued that criminalizing drug use leads to hidden consumption, increasing the risk of overdose. In a December 20, 2022, podcast episode, he emphasized the need for safe spaces where individuals can use drugs under supervision, stating that this approach empowers people to avoid fatal overdoses.
Studies Question Effectiveness of Supervised Consumption Sites
Recent studies cited by Charles Fain Lehman and Kevin A. Sabet in a 2026 Washington Post opinion piece found no reduction in overdose deaths or hospitalizations after the opening of supervised consumption sites in British Columbia and Ontario. Additionally, a federal appeals court ruled that a proposed site in Philadelphia would violate the ‘crack house’ statute.
Political Funding and Alleged Donor Ties
El-Sayed is receiving significant support from the Senate Majority PAC, which has received $15 million in contributions linked to individuals with associations involving Jeffrey Epstein, including Vinod Khosla and Jon Stryker. The PAC has also received support from George Soros’s Democracy PAC and Michael Bloomberg’s American Opportunity Action. The PAC recently committed an additional $10 million to the Michigan Senate race following El-Sayed’s meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
