The Federal Reserve has decided to maintain its target interest rate range at 3.75%-4.0% ahead of the midterm elections, marking its final rate decision before the voting period. The central bank’s vote, which took place just six days before the election, was unanimous among its members, with a 10-2 split in favor of keeping rates unchanged. The two dissenting votes came from Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack and Fed Governor Lisa Cook, who supported a rate hike.

Political and Economic Context

Typically, the Federal Reserve holds rates steady before major elections, though it may lean toward rate cuts if necessary. This decision aligns with market expectations, as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Group’s analysis indicated a 7.2% probability of another rate hike. However, markets were betting on no rate cut, as per the CME’s FedWatch tool.

President Donald Trump has been vocal in his criticism of the Fed’s rate policy, arguing that interest rates should be lowered due to the United States’ strong credit rating. Trump has claimed that the Fed is keeping rates high to see the country perform poorly, despite persistent inflation linked to the war in Iran. Despite his repeated calls for lower rates, Trump has not criticized his new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who has been part of decisions that have gone against Trump’s preferences.

Market and Policy Outlook

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who regularly discusses policy with Warsh, has expressed confidence that the market will stabilize once the Iran conflict subsides. Bessent noted that while headline inflation is high due to the energy shock, core inflation has dropped and is approaching the Fed’s target. He believes that once the energy markets are well-supplied, the Fed will be in a better position to lower rates.

The decision to keep rates unchanged reflects a balance between economic stability and political considerations. With the midterm elections approaching, the Fed is likely to remain cautious in its approach, prioritizing long-term economic health over short-term political pressures.
