‘Fjord’ Defies Hollywood’s Political Theater
A Norwegian drama challenges Hollywood’s political narrative, winning Cannes and sparking debate.

As Oscar season approaches, Hollywood is expected to deliver a lineup of politically charged films, with many following a familiar pattern of left-leaning storytelling. However, the Norwegian drama Fjord offers a stark contrast, delivering a nuanced narrative that defies the current Hollywood trend. Now in select theaters and set to expand in October, the film has already earned critical acclaim and the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
A Subtle Take on a Controversial Topic
Fjord, directed by Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, follows a deeply religious Romanian family as they settle into their new Norwegian home. Mihai and Lisbet Gheorghiu, portrayed by Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, live a simple life with their five children, embracing their Christian faith and making fast friends with their neighbors. However, their peaceful transition is disrupted when one of their children arrives at school with visible bruises, setting off a chain of events that leads to the family’s children being taken from them—including their breast-feeding infant.
The film’s narrative subtly critiques the overreach of the state and the presumption of educators and authorities to know better than parents. Mungiu, known for his previous work 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, which won the Palme d’Or, brings a unique perspective to the table, drawing from his experience in a formerly Communist nation. His approach is both personal and political, yet it avoids the heavy-handed messaging that has become common in recent Hollywood films.
Sebastian Stan’s Unusual Stance
Stan, who plays Mihai, recently appeared on the far-left “Daily Show,” where host Michael Kosta pressed him on the film’s perceived conservative bias. Stan acknowledged the film’s conservative themes but emphasized the importance of open dialogue and the family’s right to raise their children as they see fit. This stance is notable, especially given Stan’s past involvement in liberal narratives, including his role in The Apprentice, where he portrayed Donald Trump and criticized him publicly.
Stan’s recent comments, while unexpected, align with the themes of Fjord, which highlights the complexities of parental rights, state overreach, and the challenges faced by families in a society increasingly dominated by bureaucratic control.
A Film That Challenges the Status Quo
Fjord stands out as a rare example of true Hollywood diversity, offering a narrative that challenges the political orthodoxy of recent years. Its success at Cannes and the positive reception from critics suggest that audiences are ready for a more balanced and thoughtful approach to storytelling. As the film expands, it has the potential to spark a broader conversation about the role of cinema in reflecting and shaping societal values.
