Minnesota Senator-elect Peggy Flanagan has called on Senate Democrats to replace Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, signaling a shift in leadership as the party secures control of both chambers of Congress. Flanagan, who narrowly defeated Republican Michele Tafoya in the November election, made the plea during her first news conference since winning her seat.

Call for Bold Change

“I am tremendously grateful for Chuck Schumer’s leadership,” Flanagan said, according to the Minnesota Reformer. “One of the things that we heard last night, resoundingly across the country, is that we are in … a new movement in this country.” She emphasized the need for new leadership, noting that many of the newly elected Democrats were elected on promises of broader policy changes and refused corporate PAC money.

Flanagan did not name a potential successor for Schumer, who has led the Senate Democrats for nearly a decade. A leadership vote is set for December before the new Congress begins in January. If Schumer retains his position, he is expected to become the majority leader again.

Support for Change

Flanagan argued that the recent election results provide a clear mandate for leadership change. She pointed to the newly elected Democrats, including Abdulrahman El-Sayed of Michigan and Juliana Stratton of Illinois, who have also expressed opposition to Schumer’s leadership. However, prior to the midterms, Schumer had broad support among Senate Democrats, according to the Associated Press.

Flanagan’s victory over Tafoya was decisive, with her securing 53.71% of the vote compared to Tafoya’s 43.56%. The election kept the Senate seat in Democratic hands after Sen. Tina Smith chose not to seek re-election. With all 4,105 precincts reporting, the results were officially announced with Flanagan leading by over 10 percentage points.

Leadership in Transition

As the Democratic Party consolidates its control, the call for new leadership reflects growing internal pressure within the party. While Schumer faces potential challenges, the path to leadership change remains uncertain. Flanagan’s remarks underscore a broader sentiment among the party’s new crop of lawmakers, who are ready to push for more progressive policies and a different approach to governance.
