Florida officials have announced the arrest and prosecution of 20 individuals for voting fraud, including 16 non-citizens, in a statewide effort to bolster election integrity. The charges were announced by Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier and Governor Ron DeSantis, who emphasized the importance of protecting the voting process from illegal activity.

Targeting Illegal Ballots

The 20 defendants, including 16 non-citizens, were accused of falsely claiming U.S. citizenship and casting ballots in Florida elections. Four others were convicted felons who registered and voted while on probation. The cases were uncovered through a combination of federal immigration databases, voter registration applications, poll-book signatures, and vote-by-mail certificates, with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services confirming the defendants’ non-citizen status.

Statewide Election Integrity Efforts

The arrests bring Florida’s total election fraud prosecutions to over 100 since the state established the Office of Election Crimes and Security in 2022 under Senate Bill 524. More than half of these cases have been opened since Uthmeier took office. Each charge is a third-degree felony, with most defendants facing up to 10 years in prison if convicted, and one facing up to 20 years.

Legal and Political Statements

Both Uthmeier and DeSantis emphasized their commitment to election integrity and zero tolerance for voter fraud. Uthmeier noted that the defendants had sworn they were qualified electors before voting and later admitted they were never eligible. DeSantis used the event to unveil a new Association of State and Local Election Officials, with Secretary of State Cord Byrd tasked with sharing Florida’s election security strategies with other states.

Geographic Scope and Legal Implications

The cases span multiple counties, including Brevard, Collier, Columbia, DeSoto, Hillsborough, Lee, Marion, Okeechobee, and Polk. The defendants include nationals from the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Mexico, and Canada. The legal actions underscore the state’s determination to enforce strict election laws and hold individuals accountable for illegal voting.
