Former Major League Baseball star Mark Teixeira has won the congressional election for Texas’ 21st District, securing a seat for the Republican Party as Democrats maintain control of Congress. The 46-year-old, a three-time MLB All-Star and 2009 World Series champion with the New York Yankees, defeated Democrat Kristin Hook in a decisive race.

Victory in Conservative District

With 99% of the estimated votes counted, Teixeira led with 54.52% of the vote, compared to Hook’s 45.48%, according to Decision Desk HQ. Teixeira, who previously played for the Texas Rangers, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels, and New York Yankees, will represent a conservative region of the Texas Hill Country, including parts of San Antonio and its northern suburbs.

Campaign Focus and Political Background

Teixeira campaigned on issues such as border security and opposition to what he described as ‘radical woke indoctrination.’ He will succeed Rep. Chip Roy, who ran for Texas attorney general but lost the GOP runoff in May. Teixeira won the Republican primary in March with nearly 61% of the vote.

From Baseball to Politics

Teixeira, who played 14 major league seasons, finished his career with 409 home runs, five Gold Glove Awards, and three Silver Slugger Awards. He was selected fifth overall in the 2001 MLB Draft and made his major league debut with the Rangers in 2003. He helped the Yankees win the 2009 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Swearing-In and Congressional Baseball Game

Teixeira will be sworn in when the 120th Congress convenes on January 3, 2027. His arrival in Washington could also give Republicans a new weapon in the annual Congressional Baseball Game, which dates back to 1909 — if Democrats don’t intentionally walk him.

Political Legacy and Future

Teixeira’s election marks a significant shift for the district, which has historically leaned Republican. His campaign was backed by former President Donald Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott. With his new role, Teixeira aims to be a strong voice for the people of the district, emphasizing service and community support.
