Kamala Harris is quietly preparing for a potential third presidential bid, but her spouse, Doug Emhoff, is reportedly urging her to step back from the political arena. According to The Wall Street Journal, Emhoff has privately expressed his preference for Harris to avoid another campaign, although he is expected to support her if she decides to run. The Journal’s report highlights that while Emhoff is not fully on board with another presidential run, his friends still anticipate he will back Harris if she enters the race.
Despite the private reservations, Harris continues to build her campaign infrastructure. She has courted major donors, added staff, and traveled to key states to support Democratic candidates ahead of the November midterms. Her team now includes chief of staff Candace Bond, communications director Eduardo Negrón, and strategist Brian Fallon. The field she would enter looks significantly different from 2024, when the party rallied around her after President Joe Biden exited the race.
Governor Gavin Newsom, a long-time potential contender, has signaled his willingness to step aside if Harris runs. “I wouldn’t run if she ran,” Newsom told CNN. Harris still leads in most early Democratic primary polls, and she has kept the door open publicly. “I am not done,” she told the BBC, as reported by the Associated Press, while insisting she has not settled on a decision.
Emhoff has returned to private life, practicing law again at Willkie Farr & Gallagher, according to the Daily Beast. The return follows nearly three decades in the profession. He and Harris bought an $8 million home in Malibu, according to the Journal. She has hosted some business meetings there.

Donors and former staff have also expressed doubts about a 2028 victory, with some suggesting the odds are roughly even. Axios found a similar sentiment among her former aides, with only one person predicting she would go for it. The political landscape is shifting, and Harris faces a complex decision as she weighs her future in national politics.
