Hasan Piker, a far-left political streamer known for his controversial views, drew only 300 attendees to a highly publicized event at the University of Texas at Austin, despite over 2,400 people signing up or joining a waitlist. The event, hosted by the university’s College Democrats chapter, took place on September 30 at the William C. Powers Jr. Student Activity Center, which has a capacity of around 460 people. According to the Austin American-Statesman, at least two rows of seats remained empty, highlighting the significant gap between the number of sign-ups and actual turnout.
Piker’s appearance at UT-Austin has sparked discussions about the disparity in attendance. While thousands had expressed interest in attending, the event saw a much smaller crowd. An X post from DSA Watch also brought attention to the discrepancy, raising questions about the reasons behind the low turnout.
Benjamin Shrader, president of the Austin Young Republicans, helped organize a coalition of conservative groups that protested outside the event. In an exclusive interview with Campus Reform, Shrader explained that he first learned of Piker’s visit through an Eventbrite notification and subsequently reached out to various conservative organizations to coordinate the protest.
“I see a lot of people complaining about this, but I don’t see anybody taking action,” Shrader said. “When nobody else is doing something, you’ve got to do something.”
Shrader emphasized that the protesters did not seek to prevent Piker from speaking. “We made no move to cancel the event,” he told Campus Reform. “We believe in Hasan Piker’s right to say his crazy stuff, and we believe that it’s critically important that our voices were heard as well.”

Piker is already considered toxic to Democrat candidates running in this cycle. With his influence waning, some are questioning whether his fifteen minutes are already up.
