Hasan Piker, a left-wing streaming personality, has filed a $72.5 million defamation lawsuit against conservative commentator Scott Jennings, alleging false accusations of supporting racial violence. The lawsuit, filed on October 27 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, seeks at least $27.5 million in compensatory damages and $45 million in punitive damages. Piker also demanded a jury trial.

Accusations of Fabricated Evidence

The lawsuit centers on an August 11 broadcast of The Scott Jennings Show and subsequent social media posts. Piker alleges that Jennings used edited livestream footage and added a fabricated quotation to portray sarcastic remarks as support for racial violence. According to the complaint, Jennings misrepresented Piker’s statements by manipulating video footage and adding a made-up quotation that Piker never uttered.

Jennings presented these accusations as fact, telling his viewers to “listen for yourself” about Piker, knowing he was playing a falsified video. The complaint emphasizes that while Jennings was free to criticize Piker’s views, he crossed the line by knowingly attributing false statements to him and presenting them as evidence of support for racially motivated murder.

Context of the Dispute

The dispute stems from a Twitch broadcast in which Piker watched two Black political commentators debate criminal justice policy. Piker mocked a conservative participant’s criticism of “woke DAs” by sarcastically portraying him as nostalgic for the era before the civil rights movement. His lawyers argue that the surrounding discussion, laughter, and audience reactions showed he was criticizing those views, not endorsing them.

Later, Jennings compiled excerpts from three broadcasts, rearranged remarks, and removed context. He added a caption attributing a statement to Piker: “LET’S GO BACK TO A BETTER TIME WHEN LYNCHINGS WERE HAPPENING.” Piker’s lawyers claim this wording did not appear in the original recording or the edited compilation. They allege that Jennings changed a sarcastic question into a declaration.

Impact and Legal Claims

Jennings then accused Piker of “calling for Black voters to be lynched” and referred to “the Piker plan of returning our country to lynchings.” He repeated these accusations online, with one X post receiving approximately 2.5 million views by the filing date.

Piker alleges reputational damage, lost business opportunities, and emotional distress. His lawyers claim they demanded a retraction on August 31 but received no substantive response. The complaint brings claims for defamation per se, defamation by implication, and false light invasion of privacy. Scott Jennings, a CNN contributor and radio host, is the sole defendant.
