Glen Powell, a rising Hollywood star, has made a name for himself with roles in major films such as the action blockbuster ‘Tom Gun: Maverick’ and the romantic comedy ‘Anyone But You.’ At 37, Powell has built a solid fan base, thanks in part to his decision to avoid political discussions, a choice that has helped him maintain a positive public image.
Speaking to Esquire, Powell emphasized the divisive nature of politics, stating, “over time, I realized that politics divide people.” He described political discourse as “the worst version of a conversation” and expressed his disinterest in engaging with it. “People trying to prove their point — for me, it’s the worst version of a conversation. I genuinely do not like the discourse,” he said.
Glen Powell is staying quiet on politics in interviews because “over time I realized that politics divide people.”
Powell added that engaging in politics is “not presently possible” for him. “I applaud people for jumping into those things and fighting for what they believe in,” he continued. “If I were a political person, I would be talking about it. For me, my calling is elsewhere.” Despite his avoidance of political topics, Powell has a family history that suggests potential Republican leanings.
Powell’s mother, Cyndy Powell, served in the Reagan administration’s Treasury Department, and his father took the Powell last name upon their marriage, as the Powell family was influential in Texas politics. However, the family has faced significant challenges, including both parents being diagnosed with cancer when Powell was 24. The family also did not have substantial financial resources, which forced Powell to work hard to succeed in the entertainment industry.
People are upset at Glen Powell for staying quiet on politics but he’s right.
Powell has received criticism from the left for staying out of the political fray, but many have defended his choice. Brittany Hugoboom, founder of the conservative Evie Magazine, noted that Powell is “right” for “staying quiet on politics.” She also highlighted how other celebrities, such as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, have seen their political takes backfire on their careers.
