Iowa Democrat Eric Armstrong, who suspended his campaign in September due to health issues, has won the state House District 20 seat. Despite stepping down from the race, Armstrong secured victory over Republican Keith Jones with 55.2% of the vote.

Armstrong, a former railroad executive from Carter Lake, announced his withdrawal from the race via social media, stating that his health problems required his full attention. He emphasized that the district deserved a representative who could fully dedicate themselves to the race, but he had to prioritize his recovery.

Although Armstrong did not actively campaign for nearly two months, his name remained on the ballot, and he conducted no public campaign. He has not disclosed the nature of his health issues, but in a recent phone interview with The New York Times, he stated, “I’m going to do my best to represent… but I still have health issues.”

Part of Larger Democratic Gains

Armstrong’s victory is part of a broader trend of Democratic successes in Iowa. The state saw significant losses for Republicans, including the loss of the governor’s mansion and a U.S. Senate seat. Democrat Rob Sand defeated Republican Zach Lahn, ending nearly 16 years of Republican control of the governorship.

Additionally, Democrat Josh Turek won the U.S. Senate race against Republican Ashley Hinson, marking another major setback for the GOP. Turek had previously represented the same House district that Armstrong has now won, adding to the significance of his victory.

Despite President Donald Trump’s strong performance in the 2024 presidential election, the Democratic gains in Iowa suggest a shift in the state’s political landscape. Many local Democrats had anticipated a loss after Armstrong’s exit, but his unexpected win has reshaped the race.

The results highlight the unpredictable nature of elections and the impact of personal circumstances on political outcomes. As the state continues to shift, the implications for the national political scene remain to be seen.
