House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) made a surprising moment during a rally in Dubuque, Iowa, on Sunday, when he launched into an impression of President Donald Trump. The incident took a quick turn when Johnson realized that the president was standing right behind him.
Impromptu Trump Impression
Johnson began by recounting a typical phone call from the White House, complete with voices, as if he were reliving a real conversation. He described how Trump would call him at odd hours, asking if he was sleeping, and then joked about the president’s sleepless nights.
“[Trump] doesn’t sleep at all, you understand that?” Johnson began. “The man calls me at like one o’clock in the morning and also at 5:00 a.m.! ‘Mike, are you sleeping?!’ No, sir, of course not, sleep is for sissies!”
As Johnson continued, he turned and looked over his shoulder, realizing that Trump was standing right there. He immediately stopped and apologized, saying, “I’m not gonna do the impression in front of you. I’m sorry, I didn’t plan that!”
Laughter and Praise
The audience roared with laughter as Johnson took a bow, and Trump simply smiled as the moment unfolded. Johnson then made a point to acknowledge the audience, saying, “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery.”
“We’re never going to have a president like this again. God bless him, God bless the president. Thank you,” he added, before continuing to talk about his nonstop travel schedule ahead of the election.
Political Developments
Meanwhile, the GOP received a surprise boost when Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) announced her endorsement of former Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI) for the open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan. Stevens, who lost a close primary race to Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, voiced concerns about his associations with communist streamer Hasan Piker before throwing her support behind Rogers.
Following her announcement, her fellow Democrats criticized Stevens, calling her actions a betrayal of the party. Members of her own staff resigned, lashing out at her and throwing their support behind El-Sayed instead.
Endorsements and Rifts
Stevens’ endorsement of Rogers has deepened the rift within the Democratic Party, with some members accusing her of abandoning her base. The political landscape continues to shift as candidates and party members navigate the evolving dynamics of the upcoming elections.
