Kathy Griffin has publicly criticized British pop singer Ed Sheeran for removing rapper Macklemore from his tour following the rapper’s anti-Israel remarks on stage. During a recent appearance on Queerty, Griffin expressed frustration that Sheeran did not stand up to Gillette Stadium owner Robert Kraft, who reportedly pressured the artist to drop Macklemore from the tour.
Griffin’s Outspoken Take
Griffin argued that Sheeran should have defied Kraft’s demands and instead taken a stand against what she called a ‘censorship’ attempt. ‘First of all, let’s not be listening to fucking Robert Kraft, okay?’ she said. ‘When Robert Kraft says, “I’ve called all the other stadium owners and they’re not gonna let you do the show with Macklemore either,” then Ed Sheeran should’ve said, “Go fuck yourself, I can go to Brazil and perform for 250,000 people,”’
The 65-year-old comedian also emphasized that Macklemore, despite the controversy, is a global artist with significant fan support. ‘So then it put Macklemore in the position of not wanting to really blame Ed because he knew the pressure he was under,’ she added. ‘But in my humble opinion, Ed had more power than he was aware of. And I think he made a bad call on this.’
First Amendment Misunderstanding
Griffin also claimed that Macklemore’s remarks were protected under the First Amendment, a statement that some believe reflects a misunderstanding of the amendment’s intent. The First Amendment protects against government censorship, not private decisions by individuals or corporations. The Israeli-American Council (IAC) has praised Kraft and other stadium owners for their ‘moral leadership’ in removing Macklemore from the concert stage, stating that the rapper’s anti-Semitic remarks should not be allowed to reach audiences.
Controversy and Cancellations
Sheeran has faced recent controversy after Macklemore was removed from his tour following an anti-Israel rant. While Sheeran stated that the decision was made by the promoter, not himself, anti-Israel protesters gathered outside the stadium for his show. However, the concerts were ultimately canceled due to an approaching nor’easter, preventing any confrontation.
