On Wednesday’s broadcast of NewsNation’s “On Balance,” Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) emphasized that healthcare is the most pressing issue for Republicans to address. Lawler outlined several potential solutions, including associated health plans that would allow small businesses to pool resources and purchase employer-based coverage, as well as enabling purchasing across state lines to foster competition.
Addressing Cost Drivers
Lawler highlighted that the biggest drivers of cost for Americans are housing, healthcare, and energy. He stressed that merely criticizing Obamacare is insufficient and called for actionable reforms. Lawler suggested that addressing workforce shortages, particularly the shortage of doctors and nurses, is essential. He criticized the current system for educating foreign-born professionals and then expelling them, calling it ‘foolish.’
Republican Achievements
In addition to healthcare, Lawler pointed to other Republican accomplishments that he believes have helped tackle the cost of living. He cited the largest tax cut in American history, which provided an average New Yorker with over $4,000 in savings. Lawler also mentioned securing the border and reducing the influx of illegal immigration, which he argued has driven up costs in housing and healthcare. He noted that Democrats in New York spent over $8 billion on services for illegal immigrants, contributing to rising costs.
Permitting Reform and Housing
Lawler also highlighted efforts to reform the permitting process for energy projects, which he said is close to being finalized before the end of the current Congress. He mentioned that housing reforms have already been passed, along with tax cuts, as three major pillars of addressing the cost of living. Lawler emphasized that these initiatives are part of a broader strategy to bring down costs for American families.
Lawler’s comments reflect a growing bipartisan concern over the rising costs of healthcare and the need for structural reforms. While he focused on Republican achievements, he also acknowledged the challenges that remain in addressing these critical issues.
